Monrovia-The National Electoral Commission (NEC) officially released a feasibility study report last Thursday to introduce new technologies to voter registration and elections in Liberia. The new technology is biometric voter registration or BVR for short.

NEC-Liberia Chairperson Davidetta Browne Lansanah launched BVR and praised the level of support from international partners, which led to the successful report of the feasibility study, which could lead to the possible introduction of new technologies in Liberia’s voter registration and elections.

Ms. Browne Lansanah said that NEC will continue to work with other government agencies and the Ministry of the Interior and partners to ensure that the committee continues to work freely, fairly, credibly and transparently throughout Liberia.

Also in speeches, Interior Minister Varney A. Sirleaf and House of Representatives Chairman, Election and Inaugural Committee Representative Matthew Zaza pledged that both organizations support the successful introduction of BVR into Liberia’s voter registration and elections. Minister Sirleaf said that the Liberian government, through President George Weah, supports the holding of unanimous elections because the best way is to maintain the peace and stability that the country enjoys today.

Representative Matthew Zaza, speaking on behalf of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Bhufol Chambers, informed NEC that the House of Representatives is ready to support NEC’s budget to ensure the smooth implementation and realization of BVR technology in Liberia. Political party executives welcomed the introduction of BVR through Gabriel Salee, but expressed reservations and emphasized that Any national voter register established for the 2023 general election must be inclusive and strictly reviewed by all stakeholders to ensure that only Liberians can register to vote.

United Nations Development Program, United Nations Development Program Liberia Election Project Chief Technical Advisor, Lenka Homolkova, European Union Election Project Leader, European Union Election Project Leader Laura Virgili, Executive Director of the National Identity Registry, NIR, Teah Nabge, and the head of the Swedish Embassy The collaboration, Johan Romare, has pledged their personal organization to support the implementation of biometric voter registration in Liberia.
