MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin voters with disabilities can get help returning their ballots, a federal judge said Wednesday, citing a federal law that trumps a recent state Supreme Court ruling and state laws that suggest otherwise.
U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson issued his order ahead of the November election saying that voters who have difficulty returning their own ballot can choose someone to do so for them.

Greek authorities say a British man has been charged in Greece with several offenses after his flight from London to Cyprus was diverted. One of the charges is a felony for allegedly endangering transportation and passenger and crew safety. The charges were pressed after the 22-year-old man faced a prosecutor Saturday. The easyJet flight to Paphos was diverted to Thessaloniki late Friday after the passenger had apparently exhibited unruly behavior and fought with fellow passengers and the crew. The charge sheet says several empty bottles of alcoholic drinks were found on his seat. The man is being held pending a Monday appearance before a magistrate.

An apparent assassination attempt on the vice president of Argentina is raising questions about her security protocols and her habit of pressing the flesh with supporters. Cristina Fernández was greeting well-wishers Thursday when a man in the crowd pulled out a handgun, held it inches from her face and pulled the trigger with a distinct click. The loaded .38-caliber semiautomatic weapon evidently jammed, and the man was arrested. Fernández has been the most influential woman in Argentine politics for the past two decades. She has derived political strength from her closeness to the crowds that venerate her.
Sophia Smith scored a pair of first-half goals and the U.S. women’s national team defeated Nigeria 4-0 on Saturday as both teams prepare for next summer’s World Cup. The United States extended their unbeaten streak on American soil to 70 games. Over the span, they have 63 wins and seven draws. The two teams will face off again on Tuesday in Washington, D.C. Smith outmaneuvered a defender and scored from distance in the 14th minute and added another in first-half stoppage time. Lindsey Horan and Alex Morgan also had goals.
Brennan Armstrong threw for two touchdowns and ran for another and Virginia opened the Tony Elliott coaching era with a 34-17 victory against Richmond in the season-opener for both. Brian Brewton had 10 of UConn’s 54 carries and rushed for 62 yards, and Victor Rosa added his first career touchdown on the ground.

LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Republican attorney general candidate Matt DePerno told a crowd last year he had a "lab" where he could take people and show them how election equipment can be manipulated, according to a previously unreported video obtained by The Detroit News.
Cade McNamara had a lackluster performance that was made moot by a dominant defense as No. 8 Michigan routed Colorado State 51-7 Saturday. The Big Ten championship winning quarterback started the opener and is scheduled to sit at the beginning of the Hawaii game next week when J.J. McCarthy gets a shot to take the first snap. McNamara started 1 of 5 and finished 9 of 18 for 136 yards. McCarthy made the most of his limited opportunity to play, running for a 20-yard score and going 4 of 4 for 30 yards through the air.
Residents of the far-away Russian village where he spent his youth have lauded Mikhail Gorbachev too as Moscow paid last respects to him. The Soviet Union’s reformist last leader grew up in Privolnoye. The village has a population of about 3,000 in southern Russia’s Stavropol region. Gorbachev was the son of peasants. He retained the region’s distinct accent until his last days and held onto a village-bred boy’s common touch. Gorbachev went away to Moscow around 1,100 kilometers (700 miles) to the north for university. He eventually returned to the region and began rising through the ranks of the communist system. Gorbachev died Tuesday at age 91. People in Privolnoye remembered him Saturday as someone who helped the village.

Some of Formula One's top bosses are in disagreement over the system used to license drivers. The debate comes as F1's governing body reportedly is looking into a granting an exemption to IndyCar driver Colton Herta. The American has been mentioned as a possible driver for AlphaTauri next season but does not have the Super License required to compete in F1. Some teams don't believe the International Automobile Federation should allow Herta, given the current rules. However, some team bosses are open to changing the system and giving IndyCar drivers more value. Three former F1 drivers are on the current IndyCar grid.

Another goal from Erling Haaland isn’t enough for Manchester City as Leon Bailey’s second-half equalizer salvages a 1-1 draw for Aston Villa against the defending champion in the English Premier League. Haaland took his tally to 10 goals from six games by volleying in a cross from Kevin de Bruyne in the 50th minute. But he misses two chances to score a second before Villa strikes back. Bailey met a low cross from Jacob Ramsey and hammers a first-time shot high into the net in the 74th to rescue a valuable point for Villa. Their manager Steven Gerrard has been under heavy pressure after three straight league losses.
