Brazilian Social Democratic Party gets new voting app after fiasco in primary elections

The Brazilian Social Democratic Party (PSDB) tried to hold the presidential primaries on Sunday, but their efforts ended in an undisputed fiasco. The party’s specially-developed voting application contained loopholes and was accused of buying votes among candidates, which resulted in the suspension of voting, making the party look amateurish and as always fragmented.

On Tuesday, the PSDB announced that it will adopt a new tool that allows its 44,700 registered voters to choose who will represent the party in the 2022 elections. The front runners are the governor of São Paulo state João Doria (João Doria) and the governor of Rio Grande do Sul state Eduardo Leite (Eduardo Leite).

The new voting application was developed by technology company RelataSoft, which is part of the High Electoral Court’s project to develop an electronic voting machine-Brazil’s national system is 100% electronic and has never faced credible fraud charges. The original application developed by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul only allowed 8% of party members to vote on Sunday.

The party will test the new platform on Wednesday and hopes to zero individual candidates before November 28. However, the differences between the candidates mean that any form of post-primary unity is unlikely.
